"As I See It" gives students the tools to produce a series of videos and other multimedia materials on issues important to their lives. Students are divided into production teams that research, plan, and produce a short video and companion materials on a topic of their choice. The goals of the project are to interest students in a contemporary issue, to encourage in-depth examination of the issue, and to help them to express their views, using multimedia technology. In the process, students will gain skills in video production and web page development, and enhance writing, communication, and critical thinking skills.

There are six educational objectives; by the end of the project, students are able to:

  • Analyze and discuss current issues
  • Explain how visual media frame issues and influence the way youth and adults perceive the world
  • Describe the process it takes to create of video, from pre-production through post production
  • Operate a mini DV camera and practice its use
  • Understand the structure of short-form video, and how it is similar to and different from other media and other arts
  • Plan and solve problems in a team using group participation skills.

These objectives relate to Pan Left's artistic mission: Youth are under- or unrepresented as media makers in US society, while they are the target of mainstream media messages. Through this project, youth are able to present their views on social and political issues, as authors/subjects rather than audience/objects.
